I performed my first autopsy. Link to heading

This was in our forensic medicine practicals. We had a senior doctor guiding us, and also a helper. I immediately volunteered to perform the autopsy. Two other guys also volunteered.

It was a unique experience. I wasn’t nervous at all. I honestly felt nothing, other than slight anticipation. Also the body wasn’t that bad, it was pretty well preserved.

I performed an incision of the torso, I cut open the stomach, and also examined the heart, which was taken out of the body.

This experience taught me a lesson. That life is really fragile. And everything and everyone we love could disappear in just a blink of an eye. I guess that’s what makes life precious.

Also this further reinforced the stoic philosophy that I really admire, “Memento Mori”. You’ve got to live each day of your life to the fullest. You never know when it might end.

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again

The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
